Could This Be Staten Island’s Next Hotspot?
A drab building that sits on Bay Street between Victory Boulevard and Minthorne Street is in the middle of getting a facelift.
Developer Gary Angiuli envisions this is what it’ll look like when it’s done, and is billing it as the next Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
“This is gonna be a ‘sensation destination,’” said Angiuli, Managing Director of The Angiuli Group, LLC
The building will be called “The Minthorne,” a trendy destination covered in murals, designed to attract young professionals, local artists, and businesses.
It’s close to public transportation, sitting right at the foot of the Tompkinsville train station and bus stops.
Angiuli’s family owned the building for decades. It used to be a car dealership.
He says the idea just popped into his head about 7 years ago, before plans were announced for the Empire Outlets & NY Wheel in 2012.
“We’re not trying to tap into the tourist crowds that are gonna be coming 4-5 blocks away. We want this to be a place where the neighborhood people could come down,” he stated.
Angiuli recently lured Daddy O’s BBQ to the space and will open early next year.
The Flagship Brewery has called the building home since 2013.
It’s owner is looking forward to the revitalization.
“Everybody’s kind of on the same wavelength of wanting that type of epicenter to be on Staten Island & I think that this is probably what it’s going to be,” added Flagship Brewery Owner Jay Sykes.
Some neighbors we spoke with here say they think the changes will be beneficial for the community.
“Honestly, I think it’ll bring more diversity to the neighborhood, more culture, people will come out more,” said New Brighton resident Joseph Amis.
“I think everybody will be more happy for the community to grow, more jobs,” said
Luis Rosa, a Castleton Corners resident.
Angiuli says they’re still looking for another restaurant and local retailers to sign on.

The project is scheduled to be finished early next year.
